Mining in Northern Minnesota
I took my family on this trip to a mine near my hometown in northern Minnesota. My family has several generations of miners, including my father, who led us on the tour. It's always nice to be reminded of your roots.
This particular mine, is owned by Cleveland-Cliffs. The large spinning drums are used much like a rock tumbler. Eventually you'll get a fine dust that is made into a pellet, which is then shipped to the steel mills for processing. The size of the nuts holding the plating onto the mill are a bit larger than a softball. I always wondered if any have ever flown off the mill.

Google Earth. Meet Brand & Butter.
This one is a little hard to explain. I was researching some Google Maps/Earth functionality, and I noticed a placemark I had created when I first downloaded the app. When you're showing off cool new software, of course you want to show a familiar place. You guessed it! Home Sweet Home.
I've probably glanced at this view a dozen or so times before, but this time I noticed the details in the pictures. Statistically speaking, it's probably myself or John. Here is the Flickr set with more details, and here is the Google Earth link if you have it downloaded.
There goes winning the lottery, or getting struck by lightning this year.
